Origin Story

I started Get Your Pay Rise because I believe sales is an essential skill everyone should have in life.

Now, a lot of people feel like sales is icky or manipulative. I don’t believe that. In fact, let’s define sales. Sales is helping people take action on what they already want. Sales is not badgering or pushing people in to buying something for your gain, sales is finding people that want something in life your product or service can help them get. The skills required to do this are essential in many areas of life.

Enough about sales, let’s talk about why I’m teaching people how to get paid what they’re worth. Take a moment and wind back the clock 10 years. I was just starting at uni and for the first time ever, something amazing happened. I got a room to myself! That’s right, in a family of 8, it’s pretty hard to get your own room. Because I was ‘studying’ I managed to got promoted to having my own room, which was a tiny L shape that used to be my Dad’s study.

Every night when I fell asleep, I would look up at the bookshelf that still had my Dad’s books on them and one book kept catching my eye. Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki which by the way, if you haven’t read yet I highly recommend checking out. After a few months, curiosity got the better of me and I clambered up to the top shelf, dusted off Rich Dad, Poor Dad and started reading.

WOW. What a transformative experience. Robert teaches us that everybody is in sales. Think about it, every time you want your friend or parter to do something you are ‘selling’ to them why they should do it. Every time you buy something and ask for a discount, you are ‘selling’ to the store clerk on why they should give you a better price. Every time you ask your boss for a raise, you are ‘selling’ him on why he should give you more money.

At it’s core, sales is influence. Influence used wisely, will transform your life. That is why I have invested hundreds of hours and tens of thousands of dollars on learning how to communicate and sell effectively. I’ve directly seen the benefit of these skills in my personal relationships, professional relationships and in the way I get paid.
