Tips for Making a Good Salary Even Better
So, you already have a pretty good salary and want to know if you can improve it?
Of course, you can!
Asking for an even better salary than what you have is not as simple as knocking on your employer’s door and having the conversation….
You are going to need to work for it.
There are a whole bunch of things you can do to improve your profile within your company and that will put you in good light for improving your already good salary when you finally ask the question.
Become an expert in your field
Performing your job to a high standard is all good and well but continuing to learn about your industry and staying up to date with developments and trends will put you one step ahead of your colleagues. There are many ways that you can stay current with what’s going on, such as attending industry events (your company may even pay for these!), reading relevant publications regularly, or even meeting with other people in your field to discuss ideas and exchange information.
Think how impressed your boss is going to be if you ask to present a new industry standard in your next team meeting!
Be the ‘Go To’ person in the office
Being the person that everyone goes to for help may seem like a pain in the you-know-what at times, but actually it helps raise your status within the company. When everyone is constantly bringing up your name and saying you’re the one that will know what to do, your boss is going to hear (even if it’s not right away) and will be singing your praises too.
Put your hand up
You know those meetings where your boss has a great idea and needs someone to help him, but everyone avoids eye contact, so they aren’t chosen to help?
Put your hand up!
You should be putting your hand up to help at every chance you can get, as long as it’s not going to interfere with your current responsibilities.
Try to take on as many difficult challenges as you can even if it’s for a colleague and try to make sure that your boss is aware of the work that you are doing outside of your usual job scope. You can always keep some notes on the extra tasks that you’ve helped with to bring up at your next salary review meeting.
Meet and exceed your targets ALWAYS
Many positions now come with monthly or annual targets, but are you exceeding them or doing only the bare minimum possible to meet them?
Smashing your targets every month proves to your employer that you are committed to your role and are willing to go the extra mile to get things done. This doesn’t just mean hitting it out of the ball park for a few months then slacking off for a while.
Update your skills
Been thinking about doing a course to update your skills? Now’s the time to do it! There are plenty of courses available in most industries and studying no longer has to mean sitting in a classroom. You can find many courses online now that you can do at your own pace (and that don’t cost an arm and a leg) – just make sure to fully understand the time commitment so are able to put aside enough time to complete. If you are unsure of exactly what course to take, you can always ask your employer for some suggestions – this will also show them that you are serious about advancing in your career and could open up conversations regarding future promotion.
Attend company events and social activities
Now some of you may roll your eyes at this, because the thought of sitting through another social event with your colleagues bores you to tears and you’d quite simply rather be at home on the couch with a good movie and a bowl of popcorn.
I’ve got three words for you: Make yourself visible
Attending company functions, after work drinks, or Christmas parties shows that you have good team moral and are wanting to engage with your colleagues on a personal level. In the eyes of your employer, having this kind of person around is much better than someone who couldn’t give a stuff about the company as soon as 5pm hits.
Understand your company
Learning about the ins and outs of a company is not something that is on the minds of many, since a lot of people see their company only as the place where they get their pay check from. Taking the time to understand your company and showing interest when your boss speaks about the nitty gritty is even more valuable than you can imagine. It shows that you give a damn and want to be involved.
You’ll find that some employers don’t want to talk much about the financial side of the business, but if you are able to find out any information on how the company is performing then you can use this to your advantage. Knowing that the company has had an exceptional quarter or year could mean that there is more money available for topping up worthy employee’s salaries.
Get comfortable with asking for what you want
As the old saying goes, if you don’t ask, you don’t get. Being shy and uncomfortable with asking for what you want is only going to shoot you in the foot and see you miss out on opportunities to improve your salary. While acting aggressively is not the right way to go about things, being assertive is, and you can work on your assertiveness and confidence skills with family and friends, or even seek help from a life coach or other professional.
